Rep. VanWoerkom voted in support of a plan that cements commonsense paid sick leave policies to protect Michigan workers and local job providers on Thursday.

“The people of Michigan voted overwhelmingly for Republicans to lead this body – and that means they have entrusted us to wisely appropriate their hard-earned tax dollars in ways that set our state up for success,” VanWoerkom said. “I’m pleased to have this opportunity to help streamline and best prioritize spending as it relates to health care and mental health care for our state’s vulnerable populations.”

Rep. VanWoerkom was sworn into office for another term today. Michigan’s 103rd legislative term began following today’s swearing-in ceremony. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and the representative is joined by his three children.

State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom and his House Republican colleagues have announced they are not voting on any more bills until House Democrats prioritize policies to save the jobs of tipped restaurant servers and bartenders and fix a convoluted and burdensome sick leave law.

The new budget cuts school safety and mental health grant funding by more than $300 million, leaving just $26.5 million to help schools fund resource officers, mental health services, and other critical programs that protect kids. Following the passage of the budget, the teacher’s union even issued a public statement calling for the Legislature to rethink the school safety cuts and pass supplemental funding to back student mental health and safety efforts.

Rep. VanWoerkom’s plan to establish the Research and Development Tax Credit program was approved by the Senate on Wednesday. The representative serves as the Republican vice chair of the House Tax Policy Committee and has led the push to finalize the plan since the beginning of the legislative term.

“The economic programs put forth by the governor today prove that jobs aren’t growing in Michigan, and Democrat policies passed this year are to blame. They have stripped away the fundamentals of low energy costs, competitive tax structure, and available talent.”

“Michigan residents, by way of local governments, should have a say in what goes on in their communities,” VanWoerkom said. “This deliberate attempt by House Democrats to silence their voices will inhibit locals from holding people accountable for the impact that solar and wind projects have on the local environment, economy, and quality of life.”

Rep. VanWoerkom voted against the state budget proposal brought forth by House Democrats Wednesday, which he said drains the state’s multibillion-dollar surplus, creates new, unnecessary programs, and neglects the most essential needs in Michigan communities.
