State Rep. Doug Wozniak, R-Shelby Township, this week voted to invest $115 million into public safety efforts throughout Michigan. The bill, which passed the House with bipartisan support, establishes the Public Safety Trust Fund to bolster law enforcement and community-based safety programs.

“Safe communities don’t happen by chance,” Wozniak said. “They’re built through consistent support and smart investments. This funding gives our law enforcement the tools they need to protect the public effectively, while also encouraging stronger ties between officers and the people they serve.”

The plan provides local governments with access to funding for equipment, advanced training, and initiatives aimed at reducing crime and building stronger relationships between officers and the communities. It also aims to address the recruitment and retention crisis affecting police departments statewide by offering resources that improve working conditions, readiness, and morale.

“This isn’t just a short-term fix,” Wozniak said. “This is about building a public safety system that’s prepared for worst case scenarios. Locally, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office could receive up to $2.5 million more under this plan. The Shelby Township Police Department would receive an additional $181,000. These dollars will go a long way toward upgrading outdated gear and making sure every officer goes into the field with the training and support they deserve.”

“When people feel safe, it helps businesses grow, families stay, and communities thrive,” Wozniak said. “I’m proud to support this plan and the dedicated men and women who keep our streets safe.”
