Rep. Mark Tisdel: House Budget Delivers Real Support for Communities While Senate Plan Falls Short

State Representative Mark Tisdel today highlighted the stark differences between the Michigan House and Senate approaches to revenue sharing, emphasizing that the House-passed budget delivers meaningful, immediate support to local communities, while the Senate proposal does not.

The House budget includes a $65.6 million increase in statutory revenue sharing, which all goes directly to cities, villages, townships and counties. According to Tisdel, this approach ensures that local governments receive real funding they can use right away to support public safety, infrastructure, and essential services.

“Local governments need resources, not just conversations about future changes,” said Tisdel. “The House budget delivers real dollars to communities now, helping them meet rising costs and continue providing the services residents rely on every day.”

Tisdel drew a contrast with the Senate’s budget proposal, noting that it does not include a comparable increase in statutory revenue sharing and only focuses on broader restructuring of the revenue sharing system. He said this approach risks leaving cities and townships without the direct support they need during the upcoming year.

“While long-term discussions are worthwhile, they don’t help a city hire a police officer or make sure 9-1-1 services have the resources needed to continue responding when local families face an emergency,” Tisdel said. “The Senate plan denies our communities needed funding, while the House plan delivers it.”

Tisdel emphasized that the House budget reflects a commitment to putting communities first by prioritizing direct investment over uncertainty.

“Our residents expect results,” Tisdel said. “The House budget meets that expectation by strengthening local governments today while we have ongoing discussions about stabilizing funding for the future.”
