State Rep. Tom Kuhn, R-Troy, testified on behalf of House Bill 4149 which is part of the House Republican Education plan. Kuhn’s bill would improve transparency and empower parents by expanding access to Michigan’s MI School Data website.
“As legislators, we often hear from parents who want to better understand how their child’s school is performing—but many don’t even know that a state-run website already exists with comprehensive data on school performance, student outcomes, and district accountability. That’s unacceptable,” said Kuhn. “Parents should have easy access to this information—not have to dig through government websites to find it.”
HB 4149 would require all public schools to post a link to the MI School Data Parent Dashboard on their website by July 1, 2026, so parents can easily find and use the platform. It would also ensure that starting July 1, 2027, schools must send parents an annual summary of key school performance metrics, so families can track how their child’s school is doing year over year.
“This is not about adding bureaucracy or burdening schools,” said Kuhn. “It’s about making existing data more accessible so parents can be informed advocates for their children. Schools will also benefit by identifying areas for improvement and fostering stronger engagement with families.”
HB 4149 was approved by the House Education and Workforce Committee and awaits further consideration.
