State Rep. Gina Johnsen on Tuesday announced her plan to allowindividuals with valid concealed pistol licenses to carry concealed within the Capitol.
“This legislation reinforces the rights of lawful gun owners and ensures state agencies cannot arbitrarily restrict concealed carry in the people’s building,” said Johnsen, R-Portland. “It respects the Constitution while maintaining clear protocols for safety and accountability.”
The bill would amend the Michigan State Capitol Historic Site Act to clarify that the Capitol Commission may not prohibit lawful concealed carrying within the Capitol. If requested, license holders would have to present their permit, issued by Michigan or any other state, to Capitol security or the legislative sergeants, but they may not be denied their right to carry.
Johnsen’s bill comes after rock musician Ted Nugent drew headlines for carrying a concealed firearm into the Capitol last month. The incident raised questions about enforcement and transparency in Capitol security, particularly for lawful CPL holders.
“We should never have to leave our constitutional rights at the door — especially at the door of what’s supposed to be the people’s house,” Johnsen said. “This bill ensures that law-abiding CPL holders are treated fairly and consistently, without conflicting rules or selective enforcement clouding their rights. I’m proud to introduce legislation that rights that wrong and safeguards our God-given right to defend ourselves if necessary.”
