LANSING, MI – Today, the Michigan House Energy Committee advanced bipartisan legislation aimed at cementing Michigan’s position as a global leader in the development of next-generation nuclear technologies.
“The Great American Nuclear Renaissance is here,” Rep. Wendzel said. “With today’s bipartisan vote, we’re showing that Michigan is not just going to embrace these technologies, we’re going to lead the world in developing them.”
The legislation establishes a research and development tax credit to spur innovation in small modular reactor technology. It creates higher education grants to help Michigan’s colleges and universities develop specialized workforce training programs. It provides grants for workers who complete these programs and choose to build their careers in Michigan. And it introduces a production tax credit to ensure that the companies pioneering this technology do it here, in the state that’s ready to lead.
“The passage of these bills from committee marks a major milestone in making Michigan the nation’s leader in the nuclear and hydrogen industries,” Rep. Andrews said. “We are excited to have bipartisan support as we work to strengthen our energy grid and secure Michigan’s future as a powerhouse of energy independence.”
With broad bipartisan support, the legislation now moves along through the legislative process for further consideration. As Michigan continues to position itself as a leader in advanced nuclear technology, this plan lays the foundation for long-term job growth, energy security, and economic investment in the state.
